Earlier, people used to learn foreign languages as a hobby and there were select institutions like Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan and a few embassies where some foreign languages were taught. Universities were offering courses in selected foreign languages, but not many students pursued the courses to make languages their careers.
Now, the situation is different. With globalisation, the demand of foreign languages has increased considerably. A number of multinational companies (MNCs) are emerging which need interpreters and translators. Every embassy requires the services of translators and interpreters. Since India is an emerging economic power, foreign countries are establishing their base in different parts across India. Translators are also appointed by research institutions, publishing houses and industrial houses for their services.
One of the important aspects of the Indian economy is tourism. As compared to yesteryears, more and more foreigners are visiting India. Thus, inevitably, the demand of interpreters and translators is also increasing. Languages have been included as a part of the curriculum in many schools and colleges across India. Airlines and hospitality industry also employ and give preference to candidates with knowledge of foreign languages.
Various courses in foreign languages include degree courses, diploma courses and certificate courses, but one could face tough competition in acquiring seats for these courses. It is noteworthy that various countries require English teachers to teach the subject through their own languages. Every year, a number of Delhi University’s post-graduates are recruited by institutions from foreign countries for the same purpose. Those who have a flair for languages really enjoy their jobs. Most of the colleges in universities across India offer regular under-graduate courses in languages. Some courses under the University of Delhi are listed as follows:
