A dentist takes care of teeth and diseases related to teeth. With time, human teeth start decaying. Since teeth are essential to chew food, it becomes important to get artificial tooth fixed inside mouth. It is called denture. New techniques are coming whereby teeth are fixed permanently.

Entry Into Dentistry:
Like MBBS, an aspirant has to appear for competitive examinations. After completion of the 4-year course, he or she has to do 1-year internship. After becoming a dental surgeon, one can either start private practice or work under a dentist who has all the equipment necessary for dentistry. A qualified dental surgeon can also be absorbed in government hospitals. There are around 300 colleges run by the government and the private sector offering dental education. A dental surgeon may add to his qualification by doing 3-years specialist course in one of the following subjects: Prosthodontics; Periodontics; Oral and Maxillofacial; Surgery; Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics; Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics; Oral Pathology & Microbiology; Community Dentistry; Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry; Oral Medicine Diagnosis and Radiology.
