As the name reflects, fishery is concerned with fishes. Fishery is an important field of agriculture. It has become a science because of modem techniques that enable people in this business not only in catching but breeding, fish processing, freezing, and canning fishes. This includes not only fishes but other varieties of aquatic animals used as sea foods. It is a multi-disciplinary science that includes aquaculture, genetics, biotechnology, microbiology, physiology and fishery environment.
There is wide scope in fishery sciences as sea foods are very popular throughout the world. Fishes constitute almost 70% of seafood consumed the world over and has become a very big industry that requires professionals. Further, fishery is the source of livelihood for many people. India has a long seacoast line and can be used to generate lot of revenue through fishery science education. Presently, most work is done by fishermen but if qualified graduates step in, the production will be very high. Fishery science has a huge export potential and is a big source of foreign exchange earnings for any country.
It is a specialized science and graduates get employment easily. There is big scope in foreign countries like USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, European countries, Gulf and African countries.
